Extinction Rebellion has offered therapy for “climate change stress” to its protesters who may need “help” after engaging in demonstrations.

The group is offering free one-to-one sessions to over 18s who are “experiencing eco-related distress, including that arising from eco-activism or work in the climate field”.

They said climate change, as well as engaging in protests, could “lead to some of us needing help”.

The sessions will be co-led by Trained Emotional Support Network (TESN) and Climate Psychology Alliance (CPA).

They said that therapy can help those dealing with feelings of “shock, disorientation, fear or powerlessness, a sense of panic and disbelief” at climate change.

Extinction Rebellion members have caused widespread disruption across the UK with their protests and tactics to spread climate change awareness.

Last month, eco-activists from the group superglued shut the doors of almost 50 branches of Barclays bank.

The climate campaign group has accused Barclays of being “the number one funder of fossil fuels in Europe.”

A spokesperson said: “We’re responding to public attitudes and targeting the perpetrators of climate breakdown, not ordinary people and we apologise for any inconvenience caused to staff and customers.

“The inconvenience we’ve caused this morning is small in comparison to the catastrophic events already happening due to Barclays’ financing of fossil fuels.”

In September, in an attempt to get Keir Starmer to commit to banning fossil fuels, XR members released toxic smoke using grenades at Labour headquarters.

They held up banners saying, "Cut the ties to toxic fossil fuels" as part of their protest outside the Labour Party's Blackfriars Road office.

As well as pouring fake oil over the office front steps, the protesters set off smoke grenades containing toxic arsenic, potassium, chlorine, and copper.

Meanwhile, another protester chained himself to a handrail outside the headquarters.

Two protesters climbed onto the roof of the building to set off the canisters.

Earlier this year seven activists who were found guilty of causing more than £100,000 of damage by smashing windows at the headquarters of the bank were spared jail by a judge.

Prosecutors had stated the group were not entitled to vandalise property that did not belong to them but they argued that they were lawfully justified in their actions.

XR describes itself as an "international movement that uses non-violent civil disobedience in an attempt to halt mass extinction and minimise the risk of social collapse.”

In a statement on its website, the group says: “Our world is in crisis. Life itself is under threat.

“Yet every crisis contains the possibility of transformation. Across the world, heralded by the young, people are waking up and coming together.”

It says it aims to push back against "ecocide, oppression and patriarchy", adding: “Together, our rebellion is the gift this world needs. We are XR and you are us.”
